iPod undermines Microsoft on copy-locked CDs
We’re not really sure who these people are that are actually physically purchasing CDs, but News.com has an intersting article on what the future holds for DRM’d CDs. It seems that the initial round of DRM’d CDs have taken consumers by surprise - it is not like the Beastie Boys are out there marketing “Hey, buy our CD, it got copy protection schemes so you can’t get the songs to your iPod.”
But is DRM going to work? Of course not.
Nevertheless, labels see the success of BMG Music’s Velvet Revolver disc, as well as a handful of other recent releases, as a good sign and say they’re now likely to go ahead with more experiments. The SunnComm technology used by BMG is anything but bulletproof–simply holding down the computer’s Shift key can disarm the protection on PCs–but BMG executives have said the protection is enough to dissuade many casual copiers.
If it can be written, it can be broken is the old adage when it comes to DRM.
