Video: Play NES Roms on the PSP

smbSMThe PSP has just gone way up in value thanks to being able to play roms and homebrew games. The “hack” is simple. Thanks to PSPBrew.com, all you have to do is select the type of console you want your PSP to emulate (ie: NES, SNES, NeoGeo), load that emulator onto your PSP’s memory card with some roms and you are good to go. While this is already just about as simple as it gets, we’ve decided to make a little instructional video for anyone struggling to grasp the concept.

You can watch our homebrew-cut-us-some-slack-it-was-one-take-How-To by clicking here. [3.2 mb - .wmv]

Of course if you’re short on bandwidth, after the jump are some pics of classic NES games on the PSP.

  47. bud Says:

Call me a NOOB, if you want. I rather bear the shame than go on with the PAIN, of not knowing how. I need to know step by step on how to make this VBA for PSP and its roms work. I got everything else to run smooth (snes9x,Genesis).
so if u could help me out that would be great.

  48. Inuyasha986 Says:

When will Homebrew make a version that works on 1.52?

  49. playaz Says:

Ok, I have read all of this but there is one thing of information you have failed to inform, I do believe that if you take out the battery pack for a bit the system should be forced to lose the saved information. So this should solve the 80020148 Error. Becuase if you have noticed it doesnt save the update to the memory stick, but the PSP itself. When I was reading the manual for the PSP it mentioned losing information when taking out the pack.

  50. Gerardo Says:

How can you tell what version PSP you are getting? If I were to go out and buy one today would I be able to play these nes games?

  51. Soulkiller Says:

ok people theres still some confunsion on how to do this so i will do a step by step guide on how to get an emulator were to download it and were to download roms in this guide i will show u how to put in a snes emulator

    1. U MUST have a psp with a version 1.0 or 1.5 (1.51 and 1.52 don’t work YET

2.U MUST have the psp usb cable the connects your psp to ur computer

3.go to www.psp-hacks.com go to there downloads section and scroll down until u find a file called u_snes or something download it

    4. once the file is done downloading open it up u should see 2 files one that says uo_SNE~1% and a nother that says uo_SNES_pspbrew_com_insert_roms_or_files_here1
now connect your psp to the computer and turn the psp on and go to settings and then usb connection (if your computer doesn’t find the psp then try dissconecting the cable and reconnecting it in another usb slot

5 open the psp memory stick and go to the folder PSP (if not there create it)

    6. then go to GAME folder (again if not there create it)

7.drag the 2 folders u downloaded into the foler Game folder on your psp

8.google search rom world and pick ur first choice from there it shuold be easy to find roms and download them

9 now once u downloaded the roms go back to the game folder on your psp
and open up the new folder called uo_SNES_pspbrew_com_insert_roms_or_files_here1

    10. if there isn’t a folder in there called roms create it now once done with that take your roms that u download ex: mario.smc and put them in the roms folder

THERE U GO ALL DONE. now start you psp up go to the games section and go down to memory card and u shuold see somthing called snes emulator or somthing.

  64. BakaHitsuji Says:

Ok, look, for the people with the question about the battery, the battery has to be out for as long as it takes your psp to go to sleep, you know, when you leave it on for a while, then the screen goes black? well, count the secs and then try it.

  65. BakaHitsuji Says:

BTW, will someone E-mail me about the info about a really good site where i can get rare games for SNES, and if not, a wide variety at least.

  71. obrollachain85 Says:

Is there any way to make the SNES games play faster? Another hack to kind of overclock the PSP maybe? They run painfully slow and all I wanna do is play a little FF3 or Chrono Trigger when I can.

  72. chao Says:

I took out the battery for about half an hours but it still came up with the error. But my error is different and the number is 80020001.
I checked and my PSP version thing is 1.50. What to do, what to do?

  73. Karl Says:

the psp 2.0 update has really screwed things up for a lot of people
no homebrew works anymore. nothing works anymore
if someone could crack this or figure out how to undo the 2.0 update
    they would be awesome

  74. Marc Says:

I have done everything exactly how the video says but it says there are no games under the memory stick. I have version 1.5 what am I doing wrong.

  75. Isiah Says:

To have the games play faster move the analog stick to the left and a screen will come up. This is where you can then save your game and change screen options. Now to make game play fun faster just change frameskip to 3 or 4. I leave the Auto frameskip OFF as to some games tend to freeze and lock up

  76. gamefreak Says:

goto psp-hacks.com they have a file to help with ver. 1.5

  77. Karn lord of destruction Says:

i have 3.0 guysa don’t opdate if u think it will solve the 800 whatever errors cuz it doesn’t

  78. Prismite Says:

For the record, there is now a downgrade available. 2.0 -> 1.0 for those that need it. psp-hacks has it.

  80. Marco Says:

Just to guys let you know that there is a downgrade for people with version 2.0… I had version 1.51 downloaded version 2.0 and then downgraded it back to 1.5 and now all the roms work…

  81. Tim Says:

    hi,

  82. George Says:

Hey if you and a friend get the roms working on 2 PSP’s can you play two player mode on two different psps?

  83. Robert Says:

  84. wes Says:

hey, i have the vba and i cant get it to work , but all the other ones do , what am i doin wrong?

  85. Beaux Says:

    Hello n00bz,

    http://www.psp-hacks.com/playstation-portable-starter-guide.php
Read that small article… if your serious about your PSP and want to know more READ THE PAGE!!!!

I’m Just another PSP owner and after reading all the above posts I want to help you all out with what I KNOW. I am in Australia, I own a PSP with Firmware 1.52. I have Searched the internet over and over and over and will continue to do so every day until I find how to make emulators and roms work on 1.52 and 1.51. A solution for all those who are too impatiant to wait for 1.51 and 1.52 to be cracked…
Simply Update your firmware from 1.51 or 1.52 to 2.0, the reason you are doing this is because there are currently downgraders to change from 2.0 back to 1.5, so basically you upgrade, then downgrade to a firmware version that can run roms. It definatly works and there are tutorials and the files you’ll need to run the downgrade. A nice Little page with such information is http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-downgrade.php (it even includes the 2.0 udate for you… ^_^ how nice of them).

To clear something up… That garbage where you remove the battery… IF AT ALL… it would only work with systems YOU have actually upgraded to 1.51 or 1.52 YOUR SELF, if you bought your psp and it came with 1.51 or 1.52 thats the base firmware it has… as far as I know, in which case… currently the method at (http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-downgrade.php) is your only choice if you want to play emulators and roms on your 1.51 or 1.52 system NOW.

Personally… I am going to wait for some magical and brilliant person to make homebrew stuff run on 1.51 and 1.52. I have friends who have upgraded and downgraded their systems stuff and they work flawlessly. The reason I’m going to wait is because I am too damn lazy to do it to mine because Home Brew isnt really somthing I want that badly… I’m just facinated by the concept of people beating the system.

When eventually you do go through this and get your roms and emulators to work you may notice they dont typically run at full speed. Sure this sux… simply get a better emulator! one that sets the PSP’s Processor clock speed to 333mhz. Problem solved. http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/pspgenesis.shtml
The above link is reference to a Sega Genesis/Mastersystem Emulator that sets the Clock speed to 333mhz. This overclock reportedly does NOT harm your PSP at all! ^_^

I Really hope this helps you lot out! and has eliminated some of the confusion… (take the battery out for however long… pfft… sure! if you can manage to put your psp down for however long it takes only to find out it didnt help and wasted your time!)

Hi - I just got a new PSP from Japan - it comes with firmware 2.5 I believe. is there any way I can get it to play the nes games on my psp?

    Cheers

    James

  89. Beaux Says:

    Hey James,

Not as yet no… There isnt a thing you can do to roll back the Firmware to 1.5 YET, just sit tight and the geniuses working on cracking it will do it :-). Until then, Dont upgrade the firmware any further, Sony is likey to be brining out updates faster than the other Firmwares are cracked to try and put a stop to people using the device for things other than its original purpose. Just sit tight and everything will all work out.

i downloaded a snes emulator for my psp from www.pspbrew.com. i want to put roms on it and dont know where to go to get them. where did you get the rom for the games ( like mario and duck hunt) that were on your homebrew-cut-us-some-slack-it-was-one-take-How-To video?
    please email me back.

  91. ULISES Says:

I down graded my psp from 2.00 to 1.50 and loaded, i put the emulator and the roms and when starting 80020148 Error. I tried different emulators and roms and keeps saying the game cannot be started(80002148) did anyone help me fix the problem.thanks

  92. Baron vonFredrickson Worthington III esq. Says:

I got everything to work perfectly, i did the downgrade from 2.0 to 1.5 and i got a working NES emulator on my psp!!!!!! You guys really helped. My only question is after i downgrade to 1.5, do i have to keep the files that i downgraded with (i.e. EBOOT.PBP, h.bin, and index.dat)? because they just take up to much space on my memory stick.

  93. Tony Ensemble Dallas Says:

I had the 80020148 problem but I took my battery out for three minutes and the problem disappeared. Thanks.

  94. KEiv Says:

I am getting the same problem most other people are getting, when I start up the SNES emu, it say the 80002148 error, its says cant start it or w/e

  95. JayJay Says:

    I just purchased a PSP 1.52.

I followed the instructions above to upgrade to 2.0 then downgrade to 1.50. After completing this process, I was still getting the errors as many of you.

    I troubleshooted the problem!

    Here is the fix:
What I noticed that the emulator files were named incorrectly. If you go to the site where they recommend above to fetch the emulator NESTERJ or others ( http://www.pspbrew.com/utils/packgen/ ). You will discover after downloading and unzipping the files that the two folders you must use to use NES games will have the two following folder names:

    1. Nester~1%
    2. NesterJ_pspbrew_com_insert_roms_or_files_here1

What I did is rename these two folders as:

    1. NESTERJ%
    2. NESTERJ

After completing this and then loading some rom games into the rom folder. Note NES games must end with the (.nes) extention. [Example: mario.nes, supermario.nes, miketyson.nes and so forth.]

After completing this, I was able to play my favorite NES games on my PSP 1.50 unit!

I was also able to make the screen wider:
    open a ROM Game.
    then press L,
selecting Graphics Config (keep in mind that O is Enter and X is Cancel)
    Screen Size to Full Screen.

What a wonderful thing! Now I plan to purchase another PSP and upgrade that one to the latest firmware (2.60) so I can use that to browse the internet, while I use this other one (1.50) to play my rom past games!!

    Cheers!

  96. Navi Says:

    You can find ROMS:

the site is in russian but in the main page u can click on AMERICAN VERSION to goto the english section.

  98. Navi Says:

IMPORTANT: DON”T UPGRADE YOUR PSP, OR YOU WON”T BE ABLE TO RUN HOMEBREW AND ALL THAT SHIT. IF YOUR PSP IS FIRMWARE 2.01 or 2.50 THEN TOO BAD. IF YOU HAVE FIRMWARE THATS BELOW 2.0 THEN YOUR OKAY. SONY USES THOSE UPDATES TO BLOCK HOMEBREW STUFF.
TO DOWNGRADE YOUR PSP GO TO :hackaday.com TO LEARN MORE.

  99. kyle Says:

i have version 2.60 is there any hope for me

  100. Spence Says:

Is there a way to play Sega Saturn or Dreamcast considering that the psp had the same amount of buttons including the analog stick for the dreamcast?

  101. retard Says:

Uh, i don’t know if you guys know but i think i will spread the word. This Hacker/coder fanjita craked the psp versions 2.01 upwards….thats right even 2.6 to play homebrew. the only draw back is that you need grand theft auto to boot it. plesure pain balance thing i guess!!

  102. Spence Says:

Any drivers out there so i can connect my psp to a windows 98. I know about the whole thing with usb 2.00 but theres got to be another way to connect it or maybe a driver.

  106. Brian Says:

What kind of rom files to you need for NesterJ for PSP (.smc,.nes,etc.)?

  107. Spence Says:

  108. The Slobb Says:

I just had a quick question. I’ve read the whole page and didnt see it so ill ask. Can you run game boy advance games on the psp using homebrew? if so which emulator should i use. i have a couple. Ive been doing emulation for a long time and just barely got a psp! it would be awesome to take my emulation with me!!

  109. Spence Says:

well u can but its really slow and crappy. I have one and its like the newest one. (i got it from pspupdates.com) It should look like one with the incredibles. the newest one doesnt work. It still runs slow and sound sucks but it works

  110. egg Says:

how do i down grade from 2.0 to 1.5o?? pls tell me i really need to know!

just go to gooogle and search it. THe main one people use is a mph one. if u have nortons then it may not work because theres a thing called overflow that u need. If u dont have this it wont work. the bad news is that its a trojan Nortans will automatilcally delete that file. and some computers automatilcally delete it self but just google the search and youll find one

  112. Spence Says:

Just thought i mighte put the word out that theres now a full speed snes emulator. But some probelms with it that are minor for most peoples cases. It cant be in sleep mode. And there is like 5 or 6 games that are still slow. Like star fox

  115. JV Says:

I remember back on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, that I got to see you teach me how to put and Emulator on PSP. The only fault about that was, is that I didn’t remember to save it, and also I was at the local library when I watched it.

I tried to get a copy of the wmv clip off this page, but I wasn’t able to obtain it, and this was gonna be for a friend of mine who just picked up a PSP as of last month. Heck, Your the reason that I got a PSP for XMAS in 2005, instead of an XBOX 360, and for that, I thank you.

The only hardest part about console emulation, is how to run them on XBOX OG, PS2, & GAMECUBE without a modchip/GameShark/Pro Action Replay. That I’d like to know.

Anyway, could you please put a copy of your video on the attachment for the email I’m soon to get from you. That would be great!

    Anyway, contact me,

    JV

PS. If you have anybody who was able to play any 80s & 90s game system onto The big 3 consoles of 2001-2005(XBOX, PS2, NGC), let me know;)

  116. JV Says:

Okay, I’ve finally got the clip, and it’s just what I remembered it to be.

The only problems to that is this:
-What Firmware Version did you run that on, because I noticed that you had a UMD loaded up into your PSP
-What should I do if I want to play Emulators & Roms on my PSP without the unsuccessful take on only using v1.50, instead of being able to play any UMD games with the habit of losing access to just going onto the memory stick to play ‘em that way
-Is there a way to play both the Emulators & Roms with access to UMDs, because I’ve tried that so many times, that the one with the ability to go from the PHOTO section seemed to make my analog stick move on its own, and now it won’t work, unless I press REALLY HARD to make it stop or otherwise it’s very sensitive when touching near the analog stick, and I don’t have the money for another PSP, I’m darn near screw’d.

    WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!

Ok, I have a psp with v2.82. It looks like this method only works with 1.51 or 1.52 but i dunno. Anyone know how to get emulators and roms on and working? I’ve got all the emu’s and roms and I can get them on with the logo but they won’t start.

  121. Jeffro Says:
