TiVo Brand 802.11g Wireless Network Adapter

December 27th, 2005

If you’ve been itching to try out any of TiVo’s latest offerings, you’ll need to ditch the phone line and start getting your TiVo up-to-date via a broadband connection. TiVo is now selling its very own 802.11g Network adapters. Instead of digging through TiVo’s compatibility list to find an adapter that will work with your version TiVo’s service number, it’s probably money well spent to get the $49.99 TiVo brand adapter which is compatible with all TiVo Series2 DVRs.

Clipmarks: Another Solid Web 2.0 Idea

December 26th, 2005

As 2005 comes to a close, there is no doubt that this has been the biggest year for the over-promised Web 2.0 “platform” to date. Web based applications are popping up daily thanks to more powerful web browsers and the use of different programming techniques such as the increasingly popular use of AJAX. Among some of the more interesting Web 2.0 applications we have come across is Clipmarks. All throughout my web browsing career I have been faced with the dilemma of bookmarking sites. But sometimes I’ve wasted precious bookmark real-estate for a key paragraph, a short how-to, or a picture. Through the use of IE or Firefox add-ons, Clipmarks, allows you to take a clip from a page, a picture, text, or anything really and save that portion of the web page for later viewing. If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in the to bookmark or not to bookmark bind, Clipmarks may be worth checking out.

Slingbox for Mac in January?

December 25th, 2005

Buried within the second page of this New York Times on the Web article on the Slingbox is this gem of a quote:

For now, video streamed from a Slingbox cannot be viewed on an Apple Macintosh computer, though Krikorian says his company will announce a solution to that problem in January.

It will be interesting to see if Mac support for the Slingbox becomes a reality, and if/when it does how will it be implemented? H.264?

Suprnova.org 1 Year Later, Snarf-It Back on the Map

December 19th, 2005

suprnova
On the one year anniversary of the most prolific shutdown of a torrent indexing site to date, Sloncek, the infamous administrator of SuprNova.org , is speaking out as to what really went down that cold day in December 2004. Stating that his servers were raided by police, Sloncek went through a brief legal battle which amounted to nothing but dropped charges. With his reputation tainted by the not so next-big-thing eXeem, a spyware infested Peer-to-Peer application based on the BitTorrent protocol, Sloncek does not seem interested in going through the stress of another legal dilemma but maintains the current SuprNova.org site as a Peer-to-Peer news source. Ironically (or perhaps it was intentional), Snarf-It has reopened its torrent indexing doors today. So, if you’re looking to fill the old SuprNova.org void and have yet to get too attached to Mininova or Seedler, Snarf-It may be worth a look.

Create Google Personalized Homepage Modules

December 13th, 2005

Google has just taken Google Homepage to the next level. They are now offering up an API which will allow you to create custom modules to display on your personal homepage. Take a look at the API - Developer Guide to get started or check out the directory for some pre-made modules. The modules you code can also be submitted to the directory for public consumption. Nice work Google.

Mini Designer Desk Lamps

December 9th, 2005

We’ve always had a thing for Richard Sapper’s Tizio lamp and now we can build our own. Grab a pre-packaged DEK (Designer Emulation Kit) and get out your wire cutters. The do-it-yourself mini-lamp attaches to any standard 9-volt battery and comes in 4 varieties. Did we mention the light is an LED? Nice!

Slap a Rubber on your Cables

File this under ‘we should have thought of this years ago’…

ZHO Innovation has created the Cable ID, a rubberhelix sure put an end to your cable identification problems. Need to know which CAT5 cable goes to the bedroom? No problem, it’s the blue one that’s marked bedroom. Sure an old Sharpie does the trick at no cost, but these make you look like you’re actually organized.

NIKE-ID: From Outer-space Workstations

December 9th, 2005

NIKE-ID
Hiroshi Fujiwara, one of Japan’s most popular pop musicians, recently spent some time at Nike’s Portland and LA headquarters. His blog entry on the visit contains some cool pics of Nike’s private jets, but most interesting are the pics of the NIKE-ID machines of the future. Sure you can customize a pair of Nike sneaks from the comfort of your own home, but wouldn’t you feel much cooler designing them on this straight-from-outer-space NIKE-ID machine? The machines look they’re from War of the Worlds, but don’t worry, they wear Nike shoes just like the rest of us.

More pics [here].

Unlimited “Free” Online Storage

December 6th, 2005

Title of this post sound too good to be true? It is. For the uninhibited out there, desperate for someplace to backup their files online comes Allmydata.com. A kind-of Peer-to-peer “free”online storage system that works like this:

1. You download an application (Windows Only).
2. Through the application, you make space on your hard drive available to the community.
3. For every 10Mb you make available to others, you get 1Mb of online storage via Allmydata.com.

Interesting only in concept. Is free online storage really worth a 10:1 ratio of space on your hard drive vs. online space? With so many cheap online storage alternatives, we have a hard time believing that Allmydata.com’s free business model is going to take off. They do however, state that coming soon is a paid plan of 10Gb of storage for $4.99 per month.

Well, now there’s an answer, and it won’t cost you any money or a trip to the local game store. Hasbro, the makers of Monopoly, have posted PDF Monopoly money templates so that you can download and print up own Monopoly money as needed. Low on $50s? Print ‘em. It’s nice to see a company who makes board games embracing technology like this.
